David raced well despite qualifying problems for the Surrey youngster at Rockingham Speedway.
Rounds 17 and 18 of the 2009 Formula Renault UK Championship took place at Rockingham Speedway. A unique track for the BTCC package to race on due to part of the circuit being an oval with banked corners.
Hopes were high after a successful Friday test with David within the top 6 on old tyres and on the same pace as the championship leader. However after making a change for the qualifying sessions, David struggled in qualifying and could only manage 11th for race one and 12th for race two, much to his disappointment.
In race one David got a great start and was up to 8th after the first corner and a lap later was able to make up more places. Once again showing his strong race craft, David then started to slowly close in on the cars in front but there was not enough time for him to get close enough to make a move and therefore finished in 6th place.
After making a good start in race two, David came into contact with another car on the first lap which broke his front wing causing him to have to come in and have it replaced. This left him down a few laps on the leader and resulted in him finishing in last place out of the remaining runners.
After a trying weekend, David said; "Qualifying was tough because we made a change to the car which in hindsight was not the right decision because when we reverted back to the original settings we had in Friday practice for the first race, we were quick again and I was able to finish ?th from ?th on the grid."
"Race two was disappointing because I didn't even feel the contact which broke the front wing, it must just have been the angle it was hit and by the end of the first lap I knew I would have to pit to have it changed."
The final rounds of the championship take place at Brands Hatch GP on the 3rd/4th October.
