David agreed to do the opening round of the Formula Renault UK Championship with Team Firstair just two days before the Friday practice sessions as he was still trying to find the budget.
David had already completed a couple of successful tests with Team Firstair to familiarise himself with the all-new Formula Renault car that was introduced for the 2010 season.
Testing at the rapid Andover circuit, showed David to be on the pace in the dry, setting the 3rd fastest time. In the second test session, David went 8th quickest, despite it being his first time driving the new Formula Renault in full wet conditions.
With a wet first qualifying session, David qualified 3rd after a good performance from himself and the team. The second qualifying session was dry and David set the 7th fastest time.
Race one was held on the Saturday evening and after a heavy downpour of rain after the second qualifying session, the track was back to being fully wet as it was in the first qualifying session. However so far throughout the weekend the circuit had dried very quickly and was destroying the wet tyres. Team Firstair took a gamble on slick tyres with both drivers but unfortunately it proved to be the wrong choice in the race as David had dropped from 3rd on the grid to last by the end of the first lap and finished the race in a lowly 16th.
Race two was dry and David was able to make up some positions after losing out on the first lap and finished the race 6th from 7th on the grid.
After the race weekend David commented; "It has been a tough weekend for myself and the team, as we did very limited pre season testing and we only agreed to do this weekend a couple days before the Friday practice, so it has not been ideal. However I think our pace has been quite good, especially in the wet. It was just unfortunate that we made the wrong tyre choice for the first race, because we were looking likely for a podium finish. Race two was better for us, it took a lap or two for the car to come on, but once it did the pace was good and by the end of the race I was the quickest. There have been some ups and downs this weekend and we will be discussing our plans on moving forward during the next week regarding the rest of the championship."
